"EXTRA MILE" PROJECT - LINE EXTENSION TO HELSTON

ONE SLEEPER AT A TIME

Our objective is to re-create the Helston Branch Line from Gwinear Road (where it meets the main London to Penzance Line) right the way through to Helston - a distance of about 8 miles.

First priority is to extend the line from Truthall to Helston - a distance of about a mile - equivalent to about 2,000 sleepers.

The re-construction costs include the track itself, sleepers, ballast, points, signalling, land - plus much more.

Translate all that into a cost per sleeper and it comes to £100.

The first parcel of land has been purchased and clearance will start in the Autumn of 2019 once the bird nesting season is over.

We have secured funds for the purchase of most of the land through to the viaduct - focus now is on raising funds to pay for land clearance, ballast and track.

In parallel we have a separate funding project for the viaduct itself - a number of options are being considered including Lottery funding.

And then there is the land, station and infrastructure leading up to Water-ma-Trout.  We are working with a number of interested parties, including Helston Councillors, a Cornwall Councillor and our local MP in applying to the Coastal Communities Fund.
