Another successful Juniors Day and another new young volunteer joined us! We were lucky that we could divided into two groups and undertake different task, one team were oiling bits under the DMU under guidance and supervision; whilst the other team were up the line repairing fences - all part of the on-going maintenance of a railway!

We were fortunate that "Kilmersdon" was being worked on so the Junior Members could get up close and have a look and ask questions of the guys working on her.

Feedback from our Junior Members is positive - they get to "go behind the scenes" and see the wide array of what goes into a Heritage Railway, whilst learning new skills and making new friends - and the opportunity to work in some lovely Cornish Countryside!

New members always welcome, full training given. We are also looking for adults who wish to help, preferably with experience of working with Young People - the railway stuff we can teach you!  Enquires or for information, please contact  paul@helstonrailway.co.uk

Next planned Juniors Day is  Saturday 19th May, 10:30 - 14:30.

As usual, please bring lunch and suitable clothing.

New members welcome, full training given.

Working with the Blind and Visually Impaired

10 March 2018

Today we facilitated some work with the Cornwall Visual Impairment Team and Guide Dogs for the blind by providing an opportunity for a young man who is blind to practice getting on and off a railway carriage.

This is something most people take for granted, but if you are blind or visually impaired it is quite a challenge, and to practice  a stationary carriage was required.  Helen from Cornwall VI Team/Guide dogs for the blind was really pleased that Helston Railway were able to provide this opportunity for one of her clients.

Maurice, the young man who was involved, has been a visitor to us on a couple of occasions and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit again. He commented that it was great Heslton Railway could help him out with gaining his independence and with his support from College and the VI team he feels he made great progress today.

November Juniors Day

Another successful Juniors Day, where we had a bonfire to burn all the lineside clearance debris. Before we finished there was some marshmallow toasting on the remains of the fire, which was a big hit!

We also walked up to Truthall to show what has been happening and to get a team photo of today's participants! Thanks you everyone who was involved and helped out today, and welcome to Ian and Lewis who joined our group!

Juniors - Trip to Telford

Telford Steam Railway

Telford Steam Railway have been following our work with Juniors on our Facebook page and would like to set up a  similar scheme at their heritage railway.

Following lengthy conversation a trip was organized so  they could meet some of our young people, and have a conversation with them about what they have been doing and learn from their experiences, as well as meet some of volunteers who run the Junior Days.

This was a very successful trip, and our youngsters demonstrated a good knowledge (as always!) and were great ambassadors for the Helston Railway.

Part funded by the George Bairstow Charitable Trust donation.

For the young people, trips such as this, and the Launceston one earlier in October, provide an opportunity to see other railways, how they operate and run, what they offer, and a general broadening of horizons and the chance to meet other volunteers at other railways.

We are delighted to be able to provide these trips as part of the generous donation made by the Trustees of the George Bairstow Charitable Trust earlier this year.  For details of their donation - click here.

Nice day but a bit damp - we worked on the retaining wall clearing up from the last concrete pour and getting ready for the retaining wall for the steps.

future Project

We may start work on the lamp hut kindly donated by Network Rail.  The hut was at St Erth station and was replaced as part of a major upgrade project at the station.

You can see it in the picture from the 1950's - on the right side, just in front of the station building.

Juniors Day - Tuesday 30 May 2017 - 9 am to 3 pm

Hard at work - good turnout for the Juniors Day despite quite a few doing GCSE revisions.

A posting on Facebook - thanks for the feed-back - from Harvey Skinner - "Great to see that you are able to inspire young people to do this sort of thing. Who knows, they could go on to work in the rail industry or another branch of engineering. Also practical life skills which do not involve spending huge amounts of time in front of a screen!"

And some strimmers in early June - as part of developing the young people and their understanding of the operational railway, we had Josh and Matt join the crew who were strimming the lineside. They were shadowing the "look outs" to ensure the safety of the cutting crew and put some of their training into practice! All part of our developing "Juniors" section and educating our young volunteers!
